UN agency chief condemns US-backed Israeli aid plan for Gaza as a distraction

AhlulBayt News Agency: The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has criticized a controversial US-backed Israeli aid plan for Gaza, describing it as a deliberate distraction from the regime’s ongoing atrocities against Palestinians.

In a post on X, Philippe Lazzarini condemned the plan, stating that such initiatives waste valuable time and resources while famine looms and humanitarian aid remains blocked at the border.

Without directly mentioning the proposed aid mechanism, Lazzarini remarked on Saturday that developing new "plans" only serves as a distraction from the atrocities and a waste of resources.

He stressed that the UN’s humanitarian aid is piled up outside Gaza, warning that food supplies will rot and medicines will expire, while the risk of famine grows each passing day.

"The people of Gaza are dying," he wrote, demanding, "Lift the siege. Open the gates. Let us do our jobs."

Meanwhile, the UN’s aid chief, Tom Fletcher, also issued a warning on Friday, emphasizing that time should not be wasted on an alternative aid distribution plan.

In a statement on X, he urged those promoting the new system not to delay assistance, stating, "We already have a plan."

"We have thousands of trucks of food at the border. Let us in. Let us work," he added.

Over two months after Israel completely blocked aid shipments to Gaza, the regime has now agreed to a new plan that will be administered by a US-founded private organization.

The so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aims to establish aid distribution sites, secured by private US military contractors and staffed by aid workers.

However, major United Nations humanitarian organizations have refused to participate in this new aid system, cautioning that it could displace Palestinians and increase the dangers they face.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has also voiced concerns, warning that the proposed system could force families into an impossible choice between displacement and death.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder highlighted that, if implemented, the plan would put Gaza’s most vulnerable individuals—including the elderly, children with disabilities, the sick, and the wounded—at grave risk, as they may struggle to access aid in designated distribution zones.

Since mid-March, the Gaza Strip has faced a complete aid blockade, following Israel’s decision to break a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that food, water, medicines, and fuel are rapidly depleting across the populated territory, creating an unprecedented crisis.
